Cursing in the Work Place

At one point, in a different era, cursing was a complete norm in the business place. Whether it was a hospital, office or even a shop, everyone was cursing and it was quite accepted. One research study even boasted that cursing in the work place was a good thing, as it allowed employees to better express themselves. But today’s society is much different. For cursing, you may even get fired.

The worst part of cursing is all of the poor association made, especially in an office, with whoever curses. Co-workers and even supervisors may view that person as unprofessional, immature, less intelligent or undisciplined. And going even further, these people are less likely to be promoted.

The issue with this though, is the fact that there is a difference between someone who curses freely and someone who curses at others. Nobody likes the office bully, and these bullies shouldn’t be tolerated. The difference lies between what types of curse words are being used. Do they fall in the list of sexist, racist, religion or some other sort of stereotype? If so, this should not go unpunished.

Even further, some of these types of cases are going to court. Generally, these law suits don’t really stand a chance unless it can be shown to have specific unlawful basis for treatment, such as when words are spoken directly towards an individual about their race, sex, religion, etc.
Over time, the laws may continue to change, or companies may begin to change their policies. Some companies have already jumped on this idea, and implemented punishment for those who curse in the work place. This could be trending by this time next year.
