HR Success Kit

Working with Human Resources isn’t any easy job. In fact you’re constantly dealing with difficult situations and it takes a certain type of person to work in this industry; someone who is patient, calm and overly organized.

So, if you’ve decided you have these qualities and you’re looking to become an HR professional we’ve made a list of 10 invaluable tools you’ll need.

1. Coffee: For almost any job you need coffee, for functionality of course. Even when you’re fiercely bored with paperwork you’ll need coffee to keep you awake.

2. A Pretty Smile: You’re going to quickly learn you’re supposed to smile through all of your days. Even when the situations aren’t pretty you have to be friendly and personable. Having a pretty smile will help. And if you don’t, then start practicing now.

3. A comfy seat cushion: Most of the days you’ll be at your desk non-stop, unless you somehow have a slow day at work. Then maybe you’ll have time to walk around for a few minutes.

4. Lots and lots of pens: You need pens to take notes, and you take a lot of notes.

5. Organized Documentation: When you’re taking all these notes with these pens you need someplace to keep the notes safe. Whether it’s a binder or sticky notes, you need a lot of organization space.

6. HR Software: You don’t have to bring this with you, but you will use software for pretty much everything you do. It’s important to understand the software well before you start learning.

7. Ask Questions: If you’re unsure of something you’re being asked by an employee DO NOT lie to them. Simply ask someone. That last thing you want to do is give someone false information. This will make your life rough, along with the employees’.

8. Self-discipline: When you’re sitting at a desk all day it’s probably going to be difficult to not browse the internet, Youtube or Facebook. You have to bring self-discipline with you to stay focused.

9. Tough Outer Shell: You’ll deal with some pretty mean people. But don’t worry, they’re usually not upset with you, usually it’s your bosses. So don’t cry. Just use that pretty smile you’ve been working on to get through the tough conversations.

10. Compassion: Chances are, if you’re working in this field it’s because in some way, shape or form you’re compassionate about HR. Continue doing what it takes to love your job and you’ll find happiness!
